Festival of New Texas Plays

When’s the last time you could experience three different plays in the same place over one weekend? Maybe at last year’s fest, which Austin Playhouse puts on to showcase diverse new Texas voices and give a platform to emerging playwrights. Saturday features ACES by Emilie Budjaja, which interweaves storylines set two decades apart and is partially performed in Mandarin with no subtitles, and Lulu Goes to the Jim Henson Memorial Service by Kleo James Ryan, which blends humor, grief, and puppetry for a weird and touching story. Sunday’s play is Mom and Pop by Carl Gonzales, which explores family, culture, and community through the lens of a down-home restaurant. Meet the playwrights through post-reading talkbacks and/or the opening mixer or closing reception. – Kat McNevins
