Organic isn’t an adjective commonly associated with video games, which, despite the medium’s recent aesthetics trending hyperreal with pores numbering in the thousands on even Mario’s face, still hardly resembles our own flawed flesh. Yet in David Cronenberg’s directorial entrance into computer graphics, the vibe is biological even when Jennifer Jason Leigh’s petting a totally CGI creature. While many Nineties movies’ clumsy attempts at portraying the digital space reveal a fundamental fear and ignorance of actual virtual reality, Cronenberg keeps the action in-camera – projected backgrounds simulating a still car moving, synthetic skin pretending as a fleshy hole at the base of Jude Law’s spine. Definitely weird and definitely screening this Wednesday, if you snag tix for this flick you may get an intro from a certain writer whose work you’re reading right now. (It’s me! I’m intro’ing the movie!) – James Scott
