A veteran public defender weaves data and storytelling to reveal the rotten core of the U.S. indigent defense system in The Price of Mercy – a treatise on the evils of mass incarceration and how it actually increases future crime. Almanza has earned her stripes in the legal apparatus as the co-founder and executive director of public defense nonprofit Partners for Justice. Prior to that she was herself a public defender in L.A. County, Santa Clara County, and the Bronx. She is joined in conversation by Robin Bruce, co-owner of First Light and president of the Dovetail Impact Foundation, which supports anti-poverty initiatives in the global South. – Lina Fisher
