A maze often represents strife in a story – the frightening frozen hedges of The Shining or the dark beast-stalked underground of the Minotaur myth – but what if those labyrinthine halls weren’t a nightmare but a dream? Watercolor artist Elizabeth Hudson pulls from Black folklore in her new exhibition, which opened at the start of October, and melds “the natural world with both the imagined and the constructed worlds of staircases, pathways, and playgrounds.” In this in-between, she expounds on the maze as a journey one takes willingly: a way to explore one’s dreams hidden from outside obstruction. This opening reception includes a meet & greet and watercolor tutorial with Hudson, but her pieces will be available for viewing through ’til Jan. 3, 2027. – James Scott
