Born and raised in Houston and based in Chicago, guitarist Eli Winter started out as an adventurous acoustic player along the lines of Nathan Salsburg and Jack Rose. But an omnivorous musical taste, a preternatural ability to absorb influences from disparate genres, and an amplifier put him into his own category, showcased on his mark-making self-titled 2022 LP. Last year’s A Trick of the Light, which includes tunes by free jazz trumpeter Don Cherry and jazz iconoclast Carla Bley alongside his originals, forms the backbone of this performance with his regular sidefolk Sam Wagster (pedal steel) and Tyler Damon (drums).
