DIY Chia Pets

Today’s tweens may be too young to remember the original Chia Pet craze, but it’s never too late to get on board with the fad. As part of the Austin Public Library’s summer reading program, they’re offering a free kids’ craft activity at 2pm where the young’uns can learn about germination by constructing their own Chia Pet, which involves spreading chia seeds over a terra cotta sculpture so that when they grow, the sculpture has “fur.” Maybe the Chia Pet jingle can be the song of the summer: “Ch- ch- ch- chia!” – Kat McNevins
