Dirty Dancing

To say this is THE summer movie almost undersells how much director Emile Ardolino’s 1987 film encapsulates the season’s diametric attributes of being ephemeral and eternal. Somehow what happens during Frances “Baby” Houseman’s (Jennifer Grey) trip with her family to a Catskills resort are both experiences destined to fade away – childhood, the Sixties, a naive belief in inarguable paternal power – and experiences that’ll impact her entire life. Lucky for us audience members, we can revisit all the romance, dancing, and climactic lifts over and over – a forever summer where no one puts Baby in the corner. – James Scott
