Deborah Zalesne and Kwaneta Harris: Ending Isolation: The Case Against Solitary Confinement

As Kwaneta Harris wrote on these very pages during her eighth year of solitary confinement in a Texas prison, “Society would be appalled, but we’re never invited to participate in discussions concerning us.” A former nurse and business owner, currently incarcerated journalist Harris has been prolific in her work shining a light on how “being incarcerated is vastly different for women in ways that directly map onto a culture rooted in misogyny.” Tenured CUNY Law professor Deborah Zalesne has been volunteering editing expertise to imprisoned writers since 2022 and has co-authored a book with Harris, Christopher Blackwell, and Dr. Terry Kupers, and will be on hand for a Q&A about it with Harris joining virtually. Pick up a book, hear from two of the authors, and be part of the conversation at this special evening. – Kat McNevins
