Pretty much every Texan with a soul has complicated feelings about our beautiful, sweltering, gerrymandered, ridiculous state. Riley Hamilton expresses that universal moral predicament with a rich baritone that swells from a folk hero’s croon to a folk hero’s unvarnished scream. Horsetail tries out country, folk, and punk throughout their debut Four Horses, where the singer-guitarist references cockroaches, “white folks with dreadlocks,” and Tonkawa Springs. “I don’t know where I belong anymore,” he wails; he wrote these songs during a stint away, but like so many of us, he admits: “I can’t stay away.” Daybed, with a fresh album of their own, and Dorothy’s open. – Carys Anderson
