Lonesome Dove scribe Larry McMurtry died in 2021, and this is already the second biography of the literary giant published since his passing. (Tracy Daugherty’s Larry McMurtry: A Life came out in 2022.) David Streitfeld, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who writes about the tech industry for The New York Times, was personal friends with McMurtry, and a fellow book junkie, which is how he first ended up at McMurtry’s legendary bookstore in Archer City – reopened in 2025 as the Larry McMurtry Literary Center. That personal connection should inform his new biography, out March 24, which traces McMurtry’s career in books and film and his legacy as the Western genre’s preeminent practitioner. – Kimberley Jones
