Ryan Davis’ meandering narratives, slanted with an askew poetry and shocks of unexpected aphorism, have drawn praise from – and frequent comparisons to – songwriters like David Berman and Bill Callahan, and last year’s exceptional sophomore platter New Threats From the Soul fulfilled the former State Champion frontman’s place among that rarified air. With the Roadhouse Band, the Louisville songwriter layers his creaking deadpan vocals atop more country-based rhythms, though no less experimental and provocative in their unraveling epiphanies.
