When Ralphie May died in 2017, comedy lost a unique and beloved superstar. This new documentary, co-directed by his wife and fellow comic Lahna Turner, looks at the kindhearted comic’s meteoric rise, his mental health struggles, and his addiction to food and drugs. It’s also a testament to how his self-deprecating observational comedy, delivered with that trademark Arkansas drawl, made him a megastar. Turner brings the film back to the city where May recorded his 2008 stand-up special, Austin-Tatious, for a special screening and Q&A. – Richard Whittaker
