Jazz has always spoken to the times. Needing to walk a path through today’s sociopolitical chaos, bassist David Ambrosio resurrected the politically minded work of several Sixties-era Blue Note composers as the basis for Civil Disobedience. Many of these songs – from the pens of Bobby Hutcherson, Jackie McLean, Duke Pearson, Stanley Cowell, Joe Chambers, and others – remained unreleased for three decades, despite reflecting the turbulence of their moment. Ambrosio brings them roaring back to the front lines in the company of several badass musicians, including drummer Rudy Royston, saxophonist Ingrid Jensen, pianist Bruce Barth, and Austin’s own Chase Baird. – Michael Toland
