Lots of musicians are referred to as “emo”: everything from D.C. legends Rites of Spring and Embrace to – for reasons that pass understanding – My Chemical Romance. Cap’n Jazz, who started as minors and existed in the primo emo years of 1989 to 1995, have a legit claim to the term. The Cap’n’s roar featured thick chords, screamed vocals, and a vibrant sense of chaos only serious heads heard at the time and broke up. Various combinations of ex-Jazzers could be found in the Promise Ring, Joan of Arc, American Football, Owls, and others in following years. Expect lots of forty- and fiftysomethings singing their hearts out. – Joe Gross
