Cabaret

Germany’s Weimar era was marked by a flourishing of liberal ideals – creative class ascendance, sexual promiscuity, nightlife, jazz, and all manner of other indulgences were celebrated publicly. It was also the period directly before Hitler came to power. Perhaps today in America is a good time and place to reflect on that unhappy transition and the resilience of the people that went through it, through the lens of the joyous and tragic musical Cabaret. A cast of Austin’s finest takes on the classic production this fall. With abortion storylines, depictions of Nazi sentiment, and (gasp!) actor-audience interaction, this is a timely and cathartic show to see right now. – Lina Fisher
