David Lynch famously refused to comment on the meaning of his movies. He seemed to relinquish control to the audience, giving them a finished project and letting the populace make of that what they will. That can apply to the latest two shows at Northern-Southern. Brian Dulaney’s “Deck of Many Things” is, well, as advertised – symbols, loosely presented in tarot format, but open for interpretation. The bold, folk-style drawings invite closer scrutiny. As do Michelle Marchesseault’s pattern-forward images in “Twists 2016-” with their undulating lines and intriguing textures. Wandering among their work is a litmus test of what’s occupying your soul. – Cat McCarrey
