In Volkswagen, sleek, light-reflecting metal cuts through a humid-feeling portrait. The figures that compose these decadently colored scenes aren’t always human: Animals, objects, religious symbols, and tangible absence feature just as heavily, each achingly realized and edged with blurry abstraction.
