Boz Scaggs Rhythm Review

Some Lone Stars who made the pilgrimage to Sixties Mecca – San Francisco – never returned: notably Janis Joplin, whereas space cowboy Steve Miller still visits his Joker on ACL Live. Born in Canton, Ohio, but growing up north of Dallas in Plano, William Royce “Boz” Scaggs, now 82, ingested Texas soul and blues, rode it to the Bay Area and mega-platinum Seventies fame, and hardly looked back. In the last three decades, if his dusky blue-eyed songs rang more than on a fistful of occasions locally, that’s likely over-estimation. Last year’s Detour ranges into the same sort of midnight confessions that brought home a Grammy for a song on 1976 smash Silk Degrees. Scaggs won the Texas Medal of the Arts here in 2019. – Raoul Hernandez
