The first feature film to wear “un film de Leos Carax” on its sleeve also marks the start of AFS’s new series centered on the French director’s Alex Trilogy. This romantic drama – or rom dram, as I call them – introduced the world to Carax’s alter ego as played by Denis Lavant (Beau Travail), an aspiring filmmaker stunted by restlessness and romantic wrong-steps. Released in 1984, the gorgeous images Carax paints with his camera remain as strong now as they did over 40 years ago – which you’ll see should you attend the next series selection, Mauvais Sang, screening Aug. 22-23. – James Scott
