Wes Anderson’s location shoots have taken him all over the world, from Harlem (The Royal Tenenbaums) to India (The Darjeeling Limited) and various European studios standing in for the Middle East (The Phoenician Scheme), 1950s New Mexico (Asteroid City), and the made-up Republic of Zubrowka (The Grand Budapest Hotel). But it all started in Texas. Written with his University of Texas classmate Owen Wilson (who also stars, alongside brother Luke), Anderson’s first film follows a troubled dreamer and would-be criminal. The hallmarks of Anderson’s signature style – the dry humor, deliberate delivery, keen interest in planmaking, stylish needle drops, the French New Wave influence – are already in evidence in his winning debut. – Kimberley Jones
