If there’s one movie worth braving the infamously impolite David Lynch screening hordes, it’s this slice of unsettling suburbia. Quiet your impulse to laugh at the outbursts, the screaming, the “Baby wants to fuck” of it all so that everyone in the AFS theatre can really sink into one of the surreal master’s most celebrated features for its 40th anniversary. Kyle MacLachlan leads – having proven his Lynchian loyalty by playing Paul in the disastrous Dune (1984) – as naive college student Jeffrey, whose eagerness to solve a mystery gets him and young love interest Sandy (the dazzling Laura Dern) tangled in the underworld dealings of their not-so-quiet small town. – James Scott
