Black Austin Tours Presents Heritage Weekend

Ideal Barbershop, Austin’s oldest Black-owned barbershop, serves as the hub for this East Austin heritage celebration put on by Black Austin Tours. Mostly situated at the Backyard at 12th and Chicon, the day’s free festivities include a heritage and genealogy conversation, collage-making crafts, music and culture from Where Y’all At Though, Stories From 12th & Chicon, food vendors, and more. There will also be a premiere at the Millennium of Funmi Ogunro’s documentary about the history and legacy of Ideal (free, but space is limited). For those looking for a more air-conditioned experience, snag a ticket now for the morning bus tour to St. John Colony, a historic freedom colony established by formerly enslaved Black Texans in the 1870s. – Kimberley Jones
