Belly [outside]

Tanya Donelly cemented her place in indie rock history before she even fronted her own band. The Rhode Island native co-led alternative rock innovators Throwing Muses for a decade alongside her stepsister Kristin Hersh, then joined fellow sidelined songwriter Kim Deal in the Breeders for 1990’s legendary Pod. Belly’s 1993 debut Star finally premiered Donelly as a jangle pop frontwoman in her own right: Enduring single “Feed the Tree” spirals an ominous bassline – courtesy Gail Greenwood, who later played with L7 and Gang of Four – in between dreamy saccharine choruses, while “Gepetto” shimmers with the singer’s resounding ethereal chirp. – Carys Anderson
