If Vertigo’s gender dynamics give you the ick, then give this witchy rom-com a try. Released six months after Hitchcock’s psychosexual masterstroke, 1958’s Bell, Book and Candle reconvenes Kim Novak and James Stewart – only this time she’s in the driver’s seat. Novak plays a bored witch who makes Stewart’s square upstairs neighbor her plaything, only to catch real feelings along the way. The supporting cast – Jack Lemmon as her jazzbo warlock brother, Elsa “Bride of Frankenstein” Lanchester their kooky aunt, and a Siamese cat called Pyewacket – are all stellar. – Kimberley Jones
