This 1989 “metaphysical splatter film” (Premiere) is not so much to be enjoyed as to be suffered through willingly, so take that as a warning. Beginning with a suicide in which Mother Earth appears from within a man’s disemboweled guts and then does unspeakable things to birth the Son of Earth, this grotesque occult horror is not for the faint of heart. If you’re looking for some real DIY black-and-white silent freakouts this Halloween, think of this as director E. Elias Merhige’s shot, and his more mainstream horror comedy Shadow of the Vampire (starring Willem Dafoe and John Malkovich) as the chaser. – Lina Fisher
