If there’s one thing we’re getting sadly used to in the U.S., it’s a moral panic-induced call to cull certain novels, comics, and nonfiction from library shelves. Austin Public Library joins in on the fun-damental fight to kick censorship to the curb during the official Banned Books Week (Oct. 5-11), where libraries, bookstores, and lit orgs across the country stand up for the freedom to read. Kickoff is this Sunday with a big ol’ party featuring food, activities, and guest speakers like Texas Freedom to Read Project Director Hannah Terrell and Austin’s first-ever Poet Laureate Zell Miller III. Southside bookshop Reverie Books also pops up with plenty of purchasable banned books. – James Scott
