Austin Denim Runs

Running in denim might sound like a goofy premise until you realize the reason behind it. In Rome, 1999, a man’s rape conviction was overturned because the Italian Supreme Court concluded it couldn’t have been rape – the victim was wearing tight jeans. The Italian Parliament’s women responded by wearing jeans in protest on the steps of the court, inspiring Denim Day in the U.S. that same year. Nonprofit the Summer Willis Foundation, started by a survivor who found strength in running, now launches its inaugural series of runs in NYC, L.A., and Austin to support survivors of sexual violence. The scenic 5K through Camp Mabry will be healing in itself, but then there’s the community wellness fair packed with supporters, activities, and exhibits. Cheerleaders welcome! – Kat McNevins
