If you thought Alejandro González Iñárritu didn’t start making punishing movies until he contemplated the weight of a human soul (21 Grams) or what it’s like to wrestle a bear to the ground (The Revenant), his brutalizing debut feature puts the lie to that in the very first scene, when a baby-faced Gael García Bernal instigates a car crash that kicks off the action in this triptych drama set in Mexico City. A forewarning to animal lovers: Much of that action involves a dogfighting ring, and master cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto isn't shy about showing the resulting carnage. The film celebrates its 25th anniversary with a picture and sound restoration and theatrical re-release. – Kimberley Jones
