When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Oct. 26 2025
In 1983, mental health was not something we were regularly talking about as a country, which made this two-woman show an outlier when it first opened on Broadway on the way to picking up multiple Tony Award nominations and earning playwright Marsha Norman the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It will be interesting to see if Alchemy Theatre at all modernizes the story of a chronically depressed woman (Sarah-Marie Curry) preparing her mother (Johanna Whitmore) for her intended suicide. Heavy stuff, to be sure, which is why Alchemy has scheduled a talkback with mental health experts after Oct. 19’s matinee, and support materials will be available in the lobby and program throughout the show’s run. – Kimberley Jones
