I’m tapping this out the day after the Golden Globes awarded their first-ever Best Podcast statuette, as good as any indicator of normie acceptance-slash-omnipresence. But podcasts haven’t always been so dominant. There are a lot of ups and downs crammed into the medium’s relatively brief history, which this documentary surveys with a raft of heavyweight talking heads, including Ira Glass, Julie Snyder, Kara Swisher, Jad Abumrad, Kevin Smith, Roman Mars, and Marc Maron. Director Shaun Michael Colón, an AFS Grant recipient, also uses an up-and-coming podcaster, Ronald Young Jr., to both narrate (he’s got great pipes) and illustrate how desperately hard it is for indie spirits in an industry overrun with corporate interests.
