Aftersun

Bleak Week continues with Aftersun</i>, the film that earned Paul Mescal an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a single father trying to create the perfect holiday for his 11-year-old daughter. But the fact Charlotte Wells’ semi-autobiographical debut is framed through crackling home video footage watched by the daughter as a grown woman shows that her memories are of something more tragic than just ice cream and dances at a Turkish resort. A heartbreaking reminder that your parents, for all their failures, were just people too. – Richard Whittaker
