Last December, three-time Best of Austin award-winner Vanessa Gonzalez recorded her first-ever hour special at the Creek and the Cave. This month, on Sept. 15, that special dropped on Hulu as Mamona to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month: a hilarious exploration of growing up in a Texas border town with a complicated family with complicated politics. “With everything going on, it’s hard not to talk about politics,” she told the Chronicle, “especially when they affect you. You know, being a woman [and] Mexican American in Texas, it’s like my whole life is political now.” The comedian brings her unfiltered takes to Hyperreal’s medium screen this Sunday, screening not only the special but also offering a live Q&A. – James Scott
