28 Days Later

Before 28 Years Later’s zombie schlong and the retconning of 28 Weeks Later’s ending, there was Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s spare, still devastating series starter. Adopting the perspective of a bicycle courier (Cillian Murphy) who wakes from a coma to discover a lab-born “rage virus” has run rampant, the film starts after the world has more or less already ended. Famous for having its zombie stand-ins, the infected, drop the shambling act of its cinematic forebears and move terrifyingly fast, 28 Days Later looks as cruddy as you might expect for a low-budget film shot on digital video in 2000, but it works to the film’s advantage. It’s also been hard to find on streaming – so don’t miss this rare chance to see it on the big screen. – Kimberley Jones
