Just 30 miles west of Austin is one of our readers' favorite oases. Hamilton Pool rests in the hollow of a collapsed dome of a subterranean river, creating a natural limestone grotto carved out over thousands of years, that now serves as a favorite Austin swimming spot. Its clear, crisp waters boast fish and large turtles that float just as leisurely as the 232-acre nature preserve's weekend denizens. Nothing says "romantic hideaway" like a private 50-foot waterfall crashing into limpid pools. Can you hear the Muzak? Swim across the water, under and behind the waterfall, sit and listen to the falls, shout and count your echoes, or just settle in for a cuddle. The park is picturesque at all times of the year but it's most romantic during the week, when it's likely deserted.
